NEXT: A brief astrology lesson.
If you plan to attend one of my upcoming Soulful Gatherings, we’ll be talking a little astrology. The following may help to refresh your knowledge of astrology basics.
One thing that drew me to astrology is the math of it. Yes, math.
Simple addition and multiplication, but also geometric angles and ratios. It’s full of artful symmetry that is both incredibly complex and elegantly simple.
If you’re not a math person, there’s so much more to love: mythology, ancient spirituality, psychology, and human nature. And that’s just for starters.
It’s a graceful, ever-changing, comprehensive system that I find beautiful and fascinating.
While the above chart is visually appealing, this one is laid out in a more helpful way for understanding how to interpret it.
You probably know that the Zodiac is divided into twelve sections each covering a range of about 30 days. The date of your birth falls into a section, and this placement signifies your Sun sign. In addition to the twelve signs, there are ten planets and twelve houses. The signs, planets, and houses all relate to and interact with each other.
Also important are the horizontal and vertical axes, and the points at which those lines intersect the outer circle, especially the Ascendant (ASC) and the Midheaven (MC). There are two hemispheres and four quadrants, which also help organize the chart.
The layout of the Zodiac is directly related to the seasons: the Spring Equinox is the point on the left (ASC), the Summer Solstice at the bottom (IC), the Autumn Equinox at the (DSC) and the Winter Solstice at the top (MC).
The sections alternate between masculine and feminine qualities, and are divided into four alternating Elements—fire, earth, air, and water—and into three Modes—cardinal, fixed, and mutable.
Whew!
WHAT IS A SQUARE?
I am an Aquarius with Taurus rising and a Cancer Moon. Venus is my Chart Ruler. (My birthdate is February 14. Thanks, Mom!)
You may notice in my chart that there are red lines and blue lines. These lines signify relationships between planets, known as aspects.
One aspect that gets a bad rap is the Square. Opposing and Square aspects (the red lines) are considered challenging, while Trines and Sextiles (the blue lines) are considered harmonious. Why is that?
Back to the math. A square has 90-degree angles. In a chart, this means that each point on the square will fall three signs away from the next point. You probably need to think about that for a moment.
Here’s an easier way: Squares will always involve the same modality, but never the same element. Due to the layout of alternating elements and modes, each point of a Square aspect will be situated in the same mode type. (Each of the four seasons is divided into three modes.) For example, Aries and Cancer are both Cardinal signs, but Aries is a Fire sign and Cancer is a Water sign. People with Fire sign energy (assertive, action-oriented) approach things differently than those with Water sign energy (emotional, intuitive).
Therefore, the energy of a Square between two planets signifies two different ways of looking at or acting upon something. This isn’t necessarily bad. It simply means it’s helpful to consider the two different forces (elements) involved when navigating the situation. (Trines will always contain the same Element, and Sextiles the same masculine/feminine quality.)
For me, understanding astrology is a tool that helps me see my innate tendencies, personality traits, and outlook on life. It also sheds light on the personalities and tendencies of the people in my life so that I can strive to be a better mother, friend, or partner to those I love.
I’ll be discussing the new collective energy beginning this year and how you can work with it in your life in real-time at the events I have planned for the coming months. It truly is ONCE IN A LIFETIME!
If you pre-register for one of my Soulful Gatherings and email me your information, I will send you your birth chart. (jayne@jaynemills.com)
As a SPECIAL BONUS, because you read to the end of this post, if you email me your information, I’ll send you your birth chart as a token of my heartfelt appreciation for you being here.
I need your date of birth, city, and time. Yes, the time is important—sorry! I know not everyone has this information, but a few minutes can actually change your Rising sign, which is considered as important, if not more important, than your Sun sign.
That’s it for today. Thanks, as always, for being here. And remember. . .
Life is short. Read fast.
From one lover of the written word to another,
With love,
Jayne
